Story Poems

Here, you'll find poems that convey stories or moments.

Remembrance

The air echoes with cracks and booms

lit ablaze by colorful explosions.

Love of country sits in the heart of every witness.

Boys cry for their mothers

and the trenches fall from artillery fire.

A Calm Noon

I sit on the patio and watch,

the calm noon breeze wrinkling

the pool’s surface.

In the pool, I see tricks

off a stiff diving board,

splash fights,

and tiredness.

I see the treehouse we played in

out in the yard,

its decrepit frame now enjoyed

by a nest of wasps.

I sit at a cold firepit.

Its ashes give off warmth

of family

and burnt marshmallows.

Small voices float in the air

as the breeze blows away,

but faint as they are,

I’ll always hear them.

Quiet

The room sits in near silence

With only a dog’s quiet breath as company.

A window lets the light drift into the night

And fold into darkness

As the moon rests in the sky

And soft raindrops grace the soil.

Victory

His spear rent flesh

as he drew it

from his dead foe

A primal roar

the last of his soul

escaped his lungs and mouth

as he prepared

for the next man

But there was none

He looked around

and all was still

The battle was over

leaving only him

His head hung low

as he struggled

through bodies

of brother and enemy

He survived

Victory was achieved

But he felt no fortune

or winning spirit

He realized then

that war had no winners

Only victims

An exchange of blood

for nothing but blood

And the ones who lived

only had the privilege

of seeing

its fruitlessness

Here Is Peace

Tall, meek, and mighty,

They stand arm to arm.

Crisp sheddings carpet the ground

And their heirs sit high in their place,

Glowing green with help from above.

What sunlight doesn’t grace the leaves

shines through in warm, golden beams.

The air breathes through the trees,

and they wave greetings and best wishes.

The forest enjoys the comfort of small voices,

and small feet scurry up, down, and across.

In the midst of birds, squirrels, and their neighbors,

I stand still and take it all in.

Here, I can live,

I can feel,

I can breathe.

Here, is peace.
